Judge Tanisha Hickerson

For Tanisha Hickerson, Louisville is home sweet home, as she has lived there all her life. She was raised in the Crescent Hill area, in the very house her grandparents built just off of Brownsboro Road and where her parents still live close by. Tanisha’s parents instilled in her, as well as her two brothers and two sisters, to treat others with respect, to take pride in your work and to strive to achieve your dreams. She planted these same fundamental values in her own daughter, Kaelyn, as she continues to watch Kaelyn grow into a respectful, responsible and well rounded young adult now attending the University of Louisville. Tanisha’s daughter is often juggling a busy schedule between school, dance, theatre, sports administration, and community service. Tanisha is so proud of her hard work, dedication and perseverance. They are faithful, active members of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Similar to her own child, from a young age, Tanisha was jokingly remarked as the child that had to have the last word. Her talkative and expressive demeanor soon grew into a passion for speeches, debates and creative writing. She participated in her first mock trial competition at Westport Middle School, which set her firmly on my path to wanting to become an attorney. It was for that very reason, she chose to attend Louisville Central High School Magnet Career Academy and join the Law and Government Magnet. Tanisha also played basketball and volleyball all four years of high school and graduated Valedictorian of her class. Thanks to the joint venture of Central High School and the Louisville Bar Association’s Summer Internship Program, she was afforded the opportunity to begin working at a law firm at the age of fifteen.

Tanisha has not looked back since her internships in high school at Seiller & Handmaker, LLP (now Seiller Waterman, LLP) and the Legal Aid Society. She went on to attend the University of Louisville where she was a student manager and eventually a walk-on player for the Women’s Basketball team, before deciding to fully dedicate herself to the University’s Intercollegiate Policy Debate Program. Hence, she would later become a basketball referee and remain involved with the game she loves. After graduating from the University of Louisville, she then attended and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law.

In 2006, Tanisha returned to her beloved city of Louisville to begin her practice as an attorney at the law firm of Boehl, Stopher, & Graves, LLP. In 2011, she helped to open the Louisville office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A., a nationwide firm that champions quality diverse counsel to meet their clients’ needs. Promoted to Partner in 2014, she has truly enjoyed her practice, but believe that now is the time to spread her wings and sail in a new direction. It is in the winds of a just and fair judicial system that she finds herself wanting to soar. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that she embarks on, not just the next step in her legal career, but her continued commitment to her community, as Jefferson County’s District Court Judge in Division 9.
