Read moreVelvet Dowdy lives in in Henderson, Kentucky, but was raised in rural Graves County on a dairy farm. She spent her early years on the farm milking cows, feeding calves, and working in the family tobacco crop. Velvet was the first in her family to go to college. After earning her Bachelor’s Degree, she started teaching. She spent 22 years in the classroom teaching science to high school students and middle school students. During that time, Velvet earned a Master’s Degree in Teaching and became a National Board Certified Teacher. Velvet also raised two children. Her son Jacob is a teacher and football coach in Henderson, KY, and her daughter Nichole lives in Texas and works at an event planning firm.
Velvet moved to Henderson after receiving a job offer from Henderson County Schools as a curriculum specialist. While in Henderson she earned her second Master’s Degree in School Administration and spent the last years of her career as an assistant principal at North Middle School and Henderson County High School. Velvet retired in October of 2017 after 30 years in education.
Velvet currently substitute teaches in the Henderson County School system, and she is a member of the Henderson County Democratic Executive Committee.
