Read moreCat Vining is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law (roll tide). During school, she worked at the Jefferson County (Alabama) Public Defender’s Office, the Office of the Federal Defender, the Southern Center for Human Rights, and the Southern Poverty Law Center – advocating for incarcerated people facing brutal, inhumane conditions. In 2019 Cat moved to Kentucky to work at the Louisville Public Defender’s Office. For the next four years, she represented thousands of children and adults charged with anything from speeding to murder. She helped lead the unionization effort at the office and served on the bargaining committee. After over a year of fighting for a contract, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a law to absorb her office into the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. This law will squash the union’s ability to collectively bargain in July 2024. Considering this, Cat felt the call to serve her community in a different way. Cat joined Representative Morgan McGarvey’s Office as a caseworker in 2023. With her assistance, the office closed a record number of constituent cases in 2023 and even helped save the lives of Americans abroad. Cat looks forward to continuing her advocacy and serving her community.
