While getting her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Midway College, Alex volunteered extensively with Salato Wildlife Resource Center, and was Volunteer of the Year of 2011. Alex’s thesis for her master’s degree from Kentucky State University in 2014 included going to small, minority-owned, and limited-resource produce farms, and talking directly with farmers and coming up together with solutions for better farming practices to reduce bacterial contamination on their produce. Alex also spent time learning about some of the problems small local farmers face with the continual rise of corporate farming and grocery giants. Since 2014, Alex has volunteered in her community with several organizations, like NAACP and KFTC, and started her own Indivisible chapter, The Revolution NKY, aimed at addressing immediate needs within NKY that the community can tackle (and partnering with other chapters across the state). At the end of the day, Alex’s heart is towards making Kentucky a better place for all kids, including her young son to live in.
