LOUISVILLE, KY 9/22/2020 – Kentucky is facing unprecedented challenges due to a pandemic and racial injustice. Now more than ever, there is a clear need for leaders to build a stronger and more equitable Kentucky. Emerge Kentucky stands ready to recruit and train the next group of diverse women to make this happen.
As the premier training program for Democratic women, Emerge Kentucky has trained 250 women from across the Commonwealth to run for office and 34 are on the ballot for November. Thirty-six Emerge alums have been elected to office, among them, Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman. “Emerge Kentucky challenged me to begin my journey to run for office from day one. Without this program, I would not be where I am today. I look forward to having more women join our ranks and expand our incredible network.”
Emerge will launch its 2021 class with an in-depth, six-month, 70-hour training program that gives Democratic women the tools they need to win. Training sessions will be held virtually or in person according to CDC and state guidelines.
“Emerge Kentucky is committed to a 2021 class that represents the full diversity of Kentucky, from Pikeville to Paducah, McCreary County to the West End of Louisville,” explains Executive Director, Gretchen Hunt. Rep. Attica Scott, Alumna of the program adds: “We need more Black women, women of color and rural women running for office and sitting at the table when we make decisions that impact our communities. Emerge Kentucky can be a springboard for making Kentucky more just for all.”
Applications for the 2021 class are open and will close on November 7, 2020. To apply to be a part of the Emerge 2021 class or to attend an informational session, visit https://ky.emergeamerica.org/training/application-process/ or contact Gretchen Hunt at gretchen@emergeky.org .
