Louisville, KY (September 15, 2020) – Emerge Kentucky is excited to announce Gretchen Hunt of Louisville as its new Executive Director. Gretchen is no stranger to Kentucky democratic politics nor to the Emerge Kentucky network. She is a 2014 alum of the program where she utilized the skills and training received to wage an impressive campaign for state representative of the 48th district. Despite not being able to unseat the Republican incumbent, Gretchen turned a loss into action where she was tapped by then-Attorney General Andy Beshear to lead the Office of Victim’s Advocacy. There, she led efforts to address Kentucky’s rape kit backlog and formed the first Survivors Council in the nation.
Gretchen Hunt has led a life of service advocating for women and families, survivors of gender-based violence and immigrant communities. She has served in the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Center for Women and Families and recently as the Development Director for the Backside Learning Center. Through her work in the non-profit and government sectors, she has represented survivors of violence, championed legislative reforms, trained professionals at the local, state, regional, and national level, created coalitions, managed state and federal grants and overseen project development and fundraising. She has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Louisville and Brandeis School of Law and continues to be a highly sought after consultant at the regional and national levels on human trafficking.
“The Emerge Kentucky Board of Directors could not be more excited to have Gretchen Hunt onboard to lead the premier training organization. In addition to her servant’s heart and passion to support and promote women, she has a unique perspective to recruit and train democratic women as an alum of the training program. She understands the need to level the playing field for women in politics and how women serving in public office can initiate and advocate for policies that work for all Kentuckians.” ~ Susanna French, Board Chair – Emerge Kentucky
Gretchen’s commitment to equity for women and immigrants led to her being inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Halls of Fame in 2019 and continues to fuel her advocacy efforts for a more inclusive Kentucky.
“In the midst of a pandemic and national reckoning on racial injustice, there is no more important time to ensure that diverse women have a seat at the table. I am excited to lead Emerge to recruit, train and support the women who will run for office and build the Kentucky that we want to see.” ~ Gretchen Hunt
